24-Hour Urine Collection Instructions

Laboratory Supplies Needed

  • 1 special 24-hour urine collection container
  • 1 yellow-cap urine collection container with syringe

Urine Collection Instructions

  • Begin collecting urine, for example, at 7:00 AM. Discard the first morning urine and note the start time.
  • Collect all urine throughout the day into the special container. Keep the container sealed, in a dark and cool place (during summer, store in the refrigerator at 2–8°C).
  • The next morning, add the first morning urine at the same time as the previous day, e.g., 7:00 AM.
  • After completing the 24-hour collection, record the total volume of urine collected.
  • Shake the container well, and using the special syringe-equipped collection container, draw 10 ml of urine.
  • Hold the container with the suction tip facing upward, push the plunger all the way in, then break off the plunger at its base.
  • Remove the needle from the container, close the lid tightly, and bring it to the laboratory.

Note

  • During the urine collection period, the patient should consume approximately 1.5–2 liters of fluid.
