Mamuka Zakalashvili, a hepatologist and infectious disease specialist, joined “Mrcheveli” in 2012. His practice focuses on the diagnosis and management of liver pathologies and chronic infectious diseases, integrating advanced clinical care with clinical research and academic medicine.
Dr. Zakalashvili’s clinical expertise encompasses acute and chronic viral hepatitis (A, B, C, D, and E), autoimmune liver diseases, liver fibrosis and cirrhosis, including the management of related complications – as well as congenital, genetic, metabolic, cholestatic, vascular, toxic, drug-induced, and alcohol-related liver injuries.
He completed advanced clinical training at the Department of Hepatology at King’s College Hospital in London, gaining experience in pre-transplant evaluation and post-transplant management for liver transplantation. He regularly participates in clinical workshops and masterclasses organized by the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) at leading European university hospitals.
Dr. Zakalashvili completed his PhD at the University of Georgia’s School of Health Sciences (2019–2022). His doctoral dissertation evaluated the clinical and virological characteristics of hepatitis B in Georgia, resulting in numerous scientific publications in peer-reviewed international journals.
He lectures on hepato-pancreato-biliary pathologies within the American MD Program at Tbilisi State Medical University (TSMU-USMD). Since 2015, he has been actively involved in the Georgia Hepatitis C Elimination Program, contributing to patient management, treatment protocols, and the development of the program’s scientific and educational frameworks.
Dr. Zakalashvili has served on the Executive Board of the Georgian Hepatology Association (GHA) since 2012 and assumed the role of General Secretary in 2026. He is also a member of EASL, actively participating in the local adaptation of international clinical practice guidelines.
