24-Hour Urine Collection Instructions (Frozen Sample)

Laboratory Supplies Needed:

  • 1 transport cooler (freezable)
  • 1 yellow-cap urine collection container with syringe
  • 2 transport containers
  • 1 polyethylene plate
  • 1 special 24-hour urine collection container

Urine Collection Instructions:

  • Place the transport cooler horizontally in the freezer to pre-freeze.
  • Begin urine collection, for example, at 7:00 AM. Discard the first morning urine. Note the start time.
  • Collect all subsequent urine throughout the day into the special container or, if unavailable, into any clean, preferably sterile, container. Use 2–3 ml per portion. Keep the container sealed in a cool, dark place (in summer, refrigerate at 2–8°C).
  • The next morning, add the first urine sample at the same time as the previous day (e.g., 7:00 AM).
  • During the collection period, store the container in the refrigerator (2–8°C) in a black plastic bag, with the lid tightly closed.
  • After completing the 24-hour collection, record the total urine volume collected over the 24-hour period.
  • For delivery to the lab, remove the container from the refrigerator and shake it well. Using the special syringe-equipped container, extract two 10 ml samples of urine and transfer into the two transport containers (10 ml each). Tightly close the lids of both containers.
  • If the sample is to be delivered to the lab immediately, place the filled containers in the pre-frozen transport cooler and take them to the laboratory.
  • If the delivery to the lab will be delayed more than 30 minutes, place the filled containers on the polyethylene plate and freeze them. Just before transporting to the lab, place the frozen containers into the pre-frozen transport cooler and take them to the laboratory.
