What is an Allergy? An allergy is the human immune system’s response (reaction) to an otherwise harmless substance, known as an allergen.
When you have an allergy, your immune system produces antibodies against a specific allergen. Depending on how the allergen enters the body, inflammation may develop on the skin, or within the respiratory or digestive systems. Accordingly, allergens are categorized as inhalant, food-based, medicinal, etc.
Mrcheveli Laboratory offers panels for inhalant, food, and combined allergens.
Inhalant Allergens
Inhalant allergens are a group of allergens that enter the body through inhalation. After contact with the allergen, symptoms mainly manifest as allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, and allergic asthma: sneezing, nasal discharge, swelling of the nasal mucosa, itching of the throat and eyes, watery eyes, and wheezing.
In rare cases, severe, life-threatening conditions such as anaphylactic shock may develop.
The main inhalant allergens include:
-
Grass pollen (e.g., rye, timothy-grass, etc.)
-
Tree pollen
-
Animal dander/fur
-
House dust mites
-
Mold spores, etc.
Food Allergens
Food allergens enter the body through the digestive tract.
Common symptoms of food allergies include: itching and burning sensation of the oral mucosa, nausea, stomach and intestinal cramps, diarrhea, and tachycardia. In rare cases, anaphylactic shock may develop.
The main food allergens include:
-
Nuts
-
Soy
-
Wheat
-
Fish
-
Milk
-
Eggs, etc.
The testing is performed at the Mrcheveli local laboratory. The results are accompanied by an explanatory report.
Turnaround time: 3 days.
