Required Laboratory Supplies:
- Special 24-hour urine collection container
- Two yellow-capped containers with urine transfer devices
- Acidifying additive – 10% HCl, 30 mL (Keep out of reach of children. Avoid skin and mucous membrane contact)
Urine Collection Instructions:
- Start collecting urine, e.g., at 7:00 AM. Discard the first morning urine and note the start time.
- Collect all subsequent urine including the next day’s 7:00 AM sample, in the special 24-hour container.
Keep the collection container refrigerated (2–8°C) during the entire collection period. - Before collecting the first urine sample, pour 10 mL of the acidifying additive (10% HCl) into the container.
- After 24 hours of collection, record the total urine volume collected.
- Gently shake the container, then use the urine transfer devices to draw 10 mL of urine into each of the two yellow-capped containers.
- Remove the transfer devices, tightly seal the containers, and bring them to the laboratory.
Important Notes:
- During the collection period, the patient should drink approximately 1.5–2 liters of fluids.
- If the total urine volume exceeds 1 liter, add an additional 10 mL of acidifying agent for every 1 liter of urine.
