“Newborn Screening” – For Your Child’s Health

The “Mrcheveli” Medical Center laboratory offers an approved medical service performed in Germany: “Newborn Screening.”

Detailed information about the screening is available on the official website of the Pediatric Metabolic Disorder Screening Laboratory in Georgian: “Newborn Screening.”

Newborn Screening is the most effective way to detect congenital metabolic disorders. The screening list primarily includes congenital diseases that, if diagnosed and treated timely (before symptoms even appear), allow for near-full recovery. Conversely, delayed treatment can lead to irreversible processes, typically manifesting as physical and mental developmental delays and organ damage. While strictly recommended in Germany, it is not mandatory—it remains the parents’ choice.

In Georgia, newborns are routinely screened on the third day for only three conditions: Congenital Hypothyroidism, Phenylketonuria (PKU), and Cystic Fibrosis.

Our screening covers up to 49 primary diseases from the following groups:

  • Congenital metabolic disorders

  • Endocrine diseases

  • Hemoglobinopathies

Specimen for the Study: Capillary blood (from the heel or finger) or venous blood.

Recommended Timeline for Sample Collection:

  • General Screening: 36–72 hours after birth.

  • Cystic Fibrosis Screening: Up to 8 weeks of age.

  • Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID) Screening: Up to 1 year of age.

  • Metabolic Diseases: Samples can be taken at any pediatric age, though it is highly preferable within the first 2 months of life, as most symptoms are either absent or very mild during this period.

  • Note: Cord blood is not used for this study.

Important Notes:

  • Please be advised that this is a screening test only.

  • In the event of an abnormal result, additional confirmatory tests must be performed to either confirm or rule out the specific disease. These recommendations will be provided in the comments section of the test report.

Processing Time: 7–10 days. The study is conducted at the Pediatric Metabolic Disorder Screening Laboratory (Hannover, Germany)www.metabscreen.de.
