If you are sexually active—especially if you have more than one partner, have unprotected sexual contact, or are planning a pregnancy—it is essential to get tested!

Because: Sexually transmitted infections have a direct impact on sexual and reproductive health, infertility, cancer, and pregnancy complications. They also increase the risk of contracting Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Infections can be transmitted not only through sexual contact but also through skin-to-skin contact and from an infected mother to her child.

Just the Facts:

According to World Health Organization (WHO) and CDC data:

• 1 million people contract a sexually transmitted infection every day worldwide.

• Most of these infections are asymptomatic.

• Every year, 374 million new cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and trichomoniasis are recorded.

• More than 500 million people aged 15–49 have a genital infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV).

• Over 311,000 women die annually from cervical cancer caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV).

• Approximately half of all new STI cases occur among young people aged 15 to 24.

STIs include bacteria, viruses, and parasites that are primarily spread through sexual contact. While often asymptomatic, the following symptoms may develop later:

• Various types of genital rashes or sores;

• Pain and/or burning sensation during urination;

• Genital discharge;

• Pain during sexual intercourse;

• Pelvic pain.
