Jaba Zarkua, a gastroenterologist and hepatologist, joined “Mrcheveli” in 2012. His practice focuses on the diagnosis and management of digestive tract disorders, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and liver pathologies – integrating clinical care with active research and medical education.
Dr. Zarkua completed clinical observerships at Freiburg University Hospital, focusing on hepatology services, and twice at King’s College Hospital in London. There, he studied the multidisciplinary care model for IBD, which unites IBD specialists, specialized nurses, surgeons, dietitians, and endoscopists. Inspired by this framework, he introduced modern multidisciplinary approaches to IBD management in Georgia, assembled a specialized team, and pioneered the clinical use of modern biological agents and innovative therapies. He also founded the Georgian Crohn’s and Colitis Organization (GeCCO), establishing a vital network for IBD patients.
His specialized clinical interests also include neurogastroenterology, exploring the gut-brain axis. He expanded his expertise in this field during a clinical observership at the Royal London Hospital, studying a multidisciplinary neurogastroenterology model where close collaboration between gastroenterologists and psychiatrists is central to patient care. This experience advanced his clinical practice in managing patients with concurrent mental health conditions, utilizing neuromodulators, and working within integrated psychiatric and psychotherapeutic teams.
Hepatology represents a core pillar of his clinical and academic practice. Dr. Zarkua served as a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for the Hepatitis C Elimination Program in Georgia, actively shaping clinical and research strategies. He has co-authored numerous hepatology publications in leading international, peer-reviewed journals.
Beyond his clinical and academic commitments, Dr. Zarkua prioritizes medical mentorship, regularly welcoming and guiding young physicians and students interested in the field of gastroenterology.
