Pathomorphology Department

Pathological examination (the microscopic study of tissue) often provides the foundation for a definitive diagnosis and plays a decisive role in planning correct treatment pathways.

At Mrcheveli, patient tissue specimens are referred to highly specialized, accredited laboratories in Germany. Each specimen is routed dynamically to a specific subspecialty laboratory equipped with targeted expertise for the suspected condition, ensuring alignment with international diagnostic standards.

Types of Pathological Examinations
  • Routine Histopathological Examinations: Microscopic analysis applicable to all tissue types, excluding muscle tissue
  • Immunohistochemical (IHC) Testing: Advanced protein staining used to characterize tumors and identify cellular sub-types
  • Molecular-Genetic Testing: Specialized assays for rare biomarkers, genetic mutations, and targeted oncology profiles
Specialized Pathology Referral Centers

For complex and rare conditions, specimens are directly coordinated with designated German reference centers and university clinics:

  • Lymph Nodes: Directed to specialized centers for hematopathology and lymphoproliferative disorders.
  • Central Nervous System (Brain and Spinal Cord): Routed to dedicated neuropathology reference laboratories.
  • Bone Tissue: Referred to a specialized Reference Center for Bone Pathology (Osteopathology).
  • Skin Tissue: Referred to dedicated dermatopathology reference units.
  • Renal Pathologies: Processed directly by the Department of Nephropathology at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE).
  • Pediatric Oncology: Rare childhood tumors are routed to designated pediatric pathology reference centers.

In all other clinical scenarios, laboratory selection is determined individually, driven by the specific diagnostic objective.

The Mrcheveli Experience

To ensure diagnostic integrity, Mrcheveli maintains a structured pre-analytical and analytical pipeline:

  • Pre-Analytical Guidance: Detailed clinical protocols are provided prior to tissue collection (biopsy or surgical resection) to preserve specimen viability
  • Individualized Selection: Precise selection of the appropriate highly qualified, specialized laboratory in Germany for each specific case
  • Clinical Correlation: Every specimen is accompanied by comprehensive clinical data and medical documentation to support exact diagnostic interpretation
  • Logistics and Viability: Cold-chain logistics and transport protocols strictly adhere to international bio-specimen regulations
  • Interdisciplinary Consultation: When clinically indicated, direct peer-to-peer consultation is maintained with the reviewing German pathologists to ensure coordinated care

Clinical Notice: A pathology report represents a laboratory diagnosis. Clinical interpretation, staging, and final treatment planning remain the responsibility of the attending physician.
